History
Clermont County's name is derived from the French term for "clear mountains and hills." The U.S. government granted land in southern Ohio to Virginians who had served in the Revolutionary War. Because French soldiers helped the American army defeat the British at the 1781 siege of Yorktown, Virginians who settled the county named it in honor of their French allies.
The Miami, Wyandot and Shawnee people occupied Clermont County's territory when the settlers arrived. Shawnee chiefs Tecumseh and Blue Jacket resisted the white newcomers, while Wyandot chief Tarhe worked for peace. However, more and more immigrants poured into the area establishing villages, and on Dec. 9, 1800, Clermont County was formed.
On Feb. 24, 1824, Batavia became the third and current county seat. Three years later, Virginia native Ezekiel Dimmitt built the county courthouse. Dimmitt had been Batavia's first settler in 1797.
