Asset-based economic development is one of several possible strategies for addressing the region’s needs. This strategy involves:
- identifying the strengths found in Appalachian Ohio or finding new and creative uses for perceived liabilities; then,
- leveraging these assets in order to increase wealth within the region and to create jobs.
Communities that undertake this type of economic development learn to inventory cultural, natural, structural, and community capacity resources. They also are able to transform weaknesses into strengths and then are savvy enough to convert strengths into economic prosperity. Funding for projects of this type is now available through the Governor's Office of Appalachia.
