AccessAppalachia: Broadband Opportunities

E-Comm Ohio 2000-2001 general business survey indicates that Ohio's total network connectivity has increased over 150% in the past year. Almost all Ohio cities have more than doubled their total available bandwidth in the past year. Cable modem and DSL rollout schedules are very aggressive. 79% of Ohioans today live in an area with broadband service.

On June 1, 2001, the Governor's Office of Appalachia initiated a $270,000 study coordinated by the Ohio Supercomputer Center to 1.) provide a network technology assessment of Appalachia, 2) analyze citizen and business usage of the Internet, and 3) to develop a network infrastructure master plan. Leaders throughout Appalachia in the education community, the private sector, and government are aware of the need to collaborate toward entrepreneurial and technology development. Partner organizations are working within the region on the "digital divide" issue and "transitioning into the new economy."
